With retirement, I could sleep until noon should I choose. However, my body wakes me after six hours of sleep…this might be 3:30 am or 6:00 am depending on when I finally turned my body over to the joys of sleep. Every day is a new adventure, every morning I read a variety of things before I do anything but have coffee. This reading seems to give direction to my day and since most of my days are now spent writing, may give direction to what I write that day…poetry, prose, flash fiction or commentary on something I have read, heard, watched, or experienced.
The following poem spoke to me in my morning reading and I wanted to share it with anyone who happens to stumble upon my daily musings. Mary Olive is a poet that as I read more of her work, I realize what she has to say has influenced my personal writing.
Why I Wake Early
by Mary Oliver
Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and crotchety–
best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light–
good morning, good morning, good morning.
Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.
