I miss all the shadows we cast together
under winter moons’ silver glare.
I even miss the long muddy smudge
of us before dawn, when we would trudge
into the trees’ still-sleeping spirits
by the diffused yellow light from
our kitchen window.
Anyone would think it strange
to miss the loss of pieces of darkness
within the black of night.
But who but I would notice?
Who but I would feel that loss?
I think I’ll sneak out tonight, shivering
beneath this December full moon.
I’ll stare at lonely, two-dimensional me
lying there upon the snow and dream
I’m holding you again.
Of course it won’t be the same.
Things are ever darker
now that you’re gone. See,
even in my darkest days and nights,
it was you brought me light.
