The End of the Road

Would this day never end?  Leslie had been looking at houses for what seemed like a lifetime.  Deciding to make this move was difficult enough for her, but not being able to find a place to live was killing her by the hour.

It was the best for her...moving across the country.  She had to move, not only to save her life but her very soul.  Everything fell into place at the right time.  The perfect job almost found her, her house sold in days of listing it, and her new company paid to move her across the country so she could start a much needed new life.

Her realtor had to make another appointment leaving Leslie to her own devices.  Just as she turned the corner...there it was...the perfect house.  It sat at the end of the neighborhood cul de sac and best of all a "For Sale" sign sat right in the middle of the yard.  FOR SALE BY OWNER...hmmm, just how does that work?

Parking a bit away from the house, Leslie wanted to get a good view and feel for it as she walked toward the property.  The curb appeal was wonderful, beautifully landscaped, and the house and overall property seemed to have everything she was looking for to begin her new life.

Just as she stepped onto the sidewalk, the front door opened, "Welcome Leslie, we have been waiting for you."  With wide eyes, Leslie did not know whether to run, stand and scream her head off, or just surrender.

What she did know was this was somehow all very familiar.

Taking a deep breathe to try to calm her racing heart and slow the adrenaline that was running rampant through her body making her limbs tingle, she tried to think coherently. How, when she had never been here before, did this person know her name? Better yet, why were they expecting her?

Taking another deep breathe and letting it out slowly, she tried to do something she had been working on for sometime. Follow her gut feeling. Was there any danger? Nothing that she sense was life threatening. Looking around her again she saw nothing out of the ordinary. The part of her that was still running on adrenaline was still telling her to get back in the car, but there had been so many other times she had regretted following that feeling. This whole move had been about following her gut, so why should she stop now?

The answer, she wouldn't. Settling her purse more firmly on her shoulder she walked towards the house with purpose. If she was meant to die today then so be it. If not, then whatever lay behind that door was part of her destiny. Might as well find out what it was.

As she came up to the front door she found an elderly man and woman standing there smiling at me as if they had just found something precious that they had lost.

"Hello," Leslie said tentatively. There was something vaguely familiar about them., but try as she might she could not put her finger on exactly what. "Do I...know you?

The woman smile grew broader. "Yes you do, my dear. When you were very young, you're mother went on a trip. She never came home. Some years later we found out she had been in a car accident and had not survived. By the time they were able to identify her, her two year old daughter had been put into the adoption system and the paperwork had been lost. We have been looking for her ever since."

Leslie stood frozen. It was not to long ago she had found out she had been adopted. It was part of what prompted her move. She was an only child and her parents had recently passed away. Not really knowing who she was anymore, she had felt lost and needed to find herself. Now....

"We have knowing in our hearts that one day we would find each other. Since this was the last place our granddaughter saw us we have stayed here, waiting for her return," the elderly woman continued.

"You are that child, Leslie," the man she now realized was her biological grandfather said gently. "and we have been waiting a long time for you to come home. Please, won't you come in and we will tell you about your mother, your family and where you are from."

Home. After searching for so long, that sounded like a very nice place to be.

This was fun. Can't wait to read what others come up with. :)
