Oh Christmas Tree!
We never had much
But…
Mom always knew how
to stretch a dollar
Christmas was always
Special…
One big gift
Then…
little things…
needed things…
socks…
underwear…
clothes, etc.
However…
The Tree was always
the most important
Special…
In those days
she would buy one
the minute they hit the store
so she would have
the pick of the best
Then…
It was squirreled away --
sometimes in the cellar…
sometimes in the barn…
But…
we always found it
and never let on we knew
It was never unveiled
until decorations
downtown were
installed and lighted
Then…
Suddenly…
there it would be
in the living room
right in front of
the picture window
That night we could
hardly wait until
supper was eaten…
dishes done and
put away
so the tree decorating
could begin
That night…
we knew
Christmas was
on the way
