For years, I wrote in my bedroom sitting in a dark brown wicker chair listening to whatever music struck my mood for the writing time. I tried to write early in the morning most days, but life does have a habit of getting in the way of my best plans. The alternate best writing time is deep into the night, the witching hour I call it … sometime after midnight and dawn.
These days, I don't begin my daily writing until I have spent and hour or so reading…eclectic pieces, books, short stories, poetry … any one of these or all of them. I also catch up on email, twitter and FaceBook posts as well as a variety of other bloggers I follow every day before I even think about writing. Reading the writing of others makes me a better writer, gives me ideas I would not otherwise have had, and I just love to read and this gives me an excuse for myself to allow time to read every day! I also sit at my desk in a chair that is better for my back than the wicker chair…I miss my chair, but my body appreciates the adjustable desk chair.
This reading time usually gives me an inspiration for the poem that will be posted for the day on my other website which is reserved for poetry only. I post a new original poem there every day … not always at the same time, but sometime between 5 or 6 in the morning and midnight. I dearly try to post at a decent time, but again … life has a way of changing my plans and keeping me on my toes!
One of the blogs I read daily is Writer's Circle. The post for today is titled: Five Famous Authors and Their Strange Writing Rituals. The five authors in this post are James Joyce, Maya Angelou,
Truman Capote, Ernest Hemingway, and Joan Didion. I love the writing of all these authors and their rituals makes them more human to me. No I really didn't confess to all of my rituals, perhaps one day when I am famous (see me laughing at that thought) I will confess to the others!

If you write or think about writing, rituals will find you and will change as your writing changes. Embrace the rituals and write!
