Mary Oliver and Rhythm
To me, poetry is music and music is a kind of rhythm that touches everyone differently. I am a wanna be poet/writer, read a lot of poetry, write poetry daily and usually listen to music in the process. My poetry doesn't rhyme…and that is intentional! Too many children are turned off of poetry early in their educational careers because all they are only taught various methods of rhyming … given the chance they naturally gravitate to free verse as has been my experience in teaching children all types of creative writing. Children are naturally creative and the minute we put a pencil in their hands the creativity is "taught" out of them.
I saw this post on Brain Pickings today and wanted to share. Mary Oliver is a poet I wish had been one of my teachers along the way.
