Mesquites
The 'trees' as we
call them
in reality are
shrugs
livng freely in the
many pastures of
the Southwest
and a member
of the pea family
No less
The bain of cattle ranchers
dense thickets
that hide cattle
and have
dangerous thorns to
cattle and
Cowboy
alike
Pretty lacy green
Leaves adorn
these deceptive
bushes
fooling the uninitated
into thinking they
are something other
than they really are
Bean pods are like
candy to cattle and
horses alike
adding to the
food supply
Yet
creating havoc
when you have an
addicted animal
The dried wood
becomes fence posts
and gives Texas
BBQ its most
destinctivly wonderful
FLAVOR
In Spring
Mesquites are the
very last to
Bloom
giving those in the
know a heads up
on one last
Cold Snap
before
Winter
loosens its
grip on the
World

Mesquite trees are a part of the Texas landscape. I actually have on huge one in my front yard entwined with another tree. I watch this tree every day to see if it is leafing out and getting ready to bloom...so far, little progress. That tells me to be on the look out for a major cold snap Easter Weekend!
My father's sister thought they were some type of fruit orchard when she visited Texas for the first time and we were driving along a far West Texas highway. We gave her an up close and personal lesson...expecially those thorns!
Now those bean pods when dried are like crack to cattle and horses. When I was about 10, I had a pony that would not move if given the chance to get close enough to eat Mesquite Beans. I walked home many times dragging PeeWee behind me balking like a mule because he wanted to eat and I wanted to ride. Once out of the saddle, he refused to let me remount when Mesquite Beans were in question.
Always I wish you peace, joy and happiness, but most of all I wish you LOVE.
As Ever, Annie
