Writing in my books has always been something I just cannot bring myself to do. Even college textbooks had pink or yellow highlights for important points, but never notes written in the margin. A note to myself about where to find these highlighted points would be made in that course's notebook...see page ... and/or paragraph ...
Friends I knew from bookclubs always made comments in the margins as they read. Not me! Books are like friends and I would no more deface their pages by writing in the margins than I would take a black magic marker to a friend's face. Thank goodness for sticky notes, especially the see through ones!
During my many moves, beloved books either never found their way home from a loan or became victims of storage boxes ... never to be seen again. Amazon is my book replacement go to since my favorite used book stores and the hours of pleasure I had searching their nooks and crannies, stacks and piles are only ghosts in my mind. Nothing was better on a hot summer day than exploring books looking for hidden treasure...books I wanted or thought I just could not live without.
Occasionally, I purchase a book that was previously owned by a margin writer. I can live with another person's notes since I was not the one who disrupted the purity of the book's margin and had also given it a new home when it became unwanted or orphaned.
There is one margin note I will never forget! I found it, memorized it and now have no idea which book holds these words:

"Will you marry me? Be my soulmate for the rest of our lives...complete the missing parts of my life with your beauty."
I always wondered if the answer was 'yes' or 'no' ... written in the margins of another book. From the book, there was no real clue if the proposal was from a young man to his girl friend, or a bold girl written to her knight in shining armor. There is magic in the words of books, some not always written by the author.
Always, I wish you peace, joy and happiness, but most of all, I wish you Love.
As Ever, Annie
