Reality hit me right between the eyes this afternoon. I saw two ladies from my past who are much older than me and I hadn't seen in years. One had been a very important part of my growing teen years and the other the mother of a classmate.
Neither has aged well…
Yes, both have to be close to 80, but I was really surprised. I observed each of them from afar and neither knew I was watching. I'm not sure either would have recognized me had they seen me shopping in the same store.
Seeing each of them within a matter of minutes was like a deep gut punch. One had never had much hair, but her lovely white curly hair barely covered her scalp. I recognized her voice before I saw her and it was the same. However, I was not prepared for what I saw…older yes, but feeble. That was worse than the hair shocker.
The other always looked like the Avon Lady exploded on her face, but now she looked like a caricature of herself - her hair - still very full but it could have been a wig. The gut wrench was the walker and slippers she was wearing in public. She moved with a shuffling walk … so surprising from the woman who always dressed to the 9s and ALWAYS wore heels.
Getting older sucks…today just added to my personal reality of aging.
