As I was doing my morning reading, I came across the 'happy birthday's' that the blog Writer's Write does every day. Today is Kate DiCamillo's birthday.
In the course of my personal 'writing life', I have had the opportunity to meet many of the authors I look up to as being some of the best to put words on paper. Kate is one of those writers. Just after Because of Winn Dixie was published and became a nation wide sensation, she was one of the Key Note speakers at my annual writing conference. She wowed us with her genuine laid back personality and wit as she talked about the road she traveled to become a published writer.
The next morning, I left the session I was attending to get a bottle of water from the hotel gift shop. When I entered the lobby absolutely no one was there…except this tiny person standing alone. I realized it was Kate. Taking a deep breath, I walked up to her and told her how much I enjoyed her presentation the day before and loved Because of Winn Dixie. She was humbled by my compliments and shyly said thanks. We chatted briefly about something I have no memory of at this point while she waited for the airport limo to arrive. During that brief 10 - 15 minutes of my time, I realized that Kate DiCamillo was just like all of us … all of us who had a dream but actually took that leap of faith to make her dream come true.
Looking back on that day, and knowing the awards and number of additional books she has written since then, I still admire and respect her for moving across the country to follow her writing dream. I love the fact that she writes daily and also works in a books store. My ideal life!

Five Quotes
- Writing is seeing. It is paying attention.
- I have a Bachelor of Arts in English, which means I had a lot of formal training in reading.
- Every well-written book is a light for me. When you write, you use other writers and their books as guides in the wilderness.
- Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift.
- My goal is two pages a day, five days a week. I never want to write, but I’m always glad that I have done it. After I write, I go to work at the bookstore.
