- She watched him from the coffee shop window. The stranger that seemed to be everywhere. Was he stalking her or just of was this just a weird occurrence?
He was new in town or visiting. She didn't know which, but when she was out and about there he was. Always in the distance seeming to go casually about his business.
Her friend Barbara came over to give her cup a refill. "Who's that guy?" she asked Barbara.
"No one seems to know," she said. "He just showed up a couple of weeks ago. I heard he is staying out at the River Ranch, but no one knows why or who he is."
While they were talking, the little bell attached to the door announced a new arrival. Looking up, there he was. In her air space for the first time since she noticed him.
Damn, he was even better looking up close. Blue-black hair with just enough curl to look fashionably messy, emerald eyes surrounded by the longest possible black lashes… clean shaven and smelling as good as he looked, she was instantly smitten. Not love at first sight, but a healthy dose of lust.
She sipped her new coffee and watched him saunter across to the pastry case. Ordering black coffee and lemon bread he looked around for an empty seat.
He was asking Barbara something she couldn't hear. Both of their voices were just below her hearing range. Barbara got his coffee and lemon bread, then walked around the counter.
With wide eyes, she watched as they both walked other table. Barbara began the introductions. He was a writer here in the area researching rural life along the Colorado and working from River Ranch. His name was Scott Braden.
She just sat there in shock not believing he was standing right there close enough for her to touch him. Lost in her thoughts, she realized he was talking to her.
"It is a pleasure to meet you," she said. "I'm Chris."
"Barbara tells me you are a local historian and a nature photographer," Scott continued. "I need an assistant who knows the area, the people, this history to help me with a book I am working on right now. Would you be able to help me out while I am here?"
Barbara winked and turned to go, "Scott, you won't find anyone in the area that knows more than Chris. You guys get acquainted and I'll keep your cups filled, on the house."
