She still could not believe her good luck. Stretching and turning to the bed-side clock, Emily knew she was awake again well before the alarm.
Searching for slippers and robe, she was eager to begin her day. Regardless of what time she got up, Mrs. Mac - her right arm, was always in the kitchen with coffee brewing, bread baking and planning the menu for the day. Emily had given up trying to get downstairs first. The kitchen was
Mac's domain and no one messed with her things…not even the coffee pot.
Checking the register, Emily noticed the late night guests arrived just after mid-night as arranged. Hiring Bridget as the night manager was money well spent and meant a good uninterrupted night's sleep for her and Mac.
Cutting through the dining room, Emily found Bridget laying the breakfast table and side board. Orange juice was chilling along with hot water, tea, cream, sugar and lemon waiting for tea drinking guests to help themselves.
Mac always had a basic hot breakfast every morning that would be laid out closer to serving time. She also did a cook to order to keep everyone happy and make sure special diets were honored. Emily noticed the long dining table had bowls of assorted fresh fruit altering with fresh cut flowers along the mid-line. No detail went unnoticed and she again gave thanks for Mac and Bridget.
"Emily," Bridget said softly. "One of the late-night guests asked me to have you meet him in the Conservatory when you came down. He ordered a coffee tray and scones and is waiting for you."
Oh my, breakfast is casual and guests often come down in robes and slippers provided in every room, but the owner - ME - should be dressed to greet them. My plan had been to grab a quick cup of coffee and go back upstairs to get ready for the day. Well…no time to change now and she was presentable enough. Hair combed and teeth brushed --- but not a scrap of makeup.
Walking into the Conservatory, Emily saw him standing at the South windows. Her heart caught in her throat as it had not done in years and she stopped to enjoy the view! His broad shoulders, narrow hips and shoulder length silver hair suited him as it always had in his youth. He is still damned sexy and even in his mid sixties made her weak in the knees just looking at him. The same reaction as always, pounding heart, shallow breathing and a serious longing deep in her soul.
Slowly, Jeff turned and gave her the smile that melts her heart as it spread across his face.
"You can run kid, but I will always find you," he said as though they had seen each other the day before instead of nearly twenty years ago. "Coffee, no sugar and light cream…your cup is waiting and so am I."
