Crossing Over!
Dreams at times are so much more than our unconscious mind providing us with cinematic entertainment while we float in and out of REM sleep. Sometimes they are a rehash of the day that helps us solve a problem. Other times, dreams may serve as prophecy…if you believe in that sort of thing. Finally, dreams seem to be forms of “out of body experiences” that have no other rational explanation.
I have had several of this type of dream since becoming an adult. The first one scared the hell out of me and to this day is still unsettling due to the vivid nature of what happened in the dream. My most recent ‘dream’ occurred several summers ago, but is still as fresh as though it happened yesterday.
Here is what I remember… In this dream, my mother who had been dead for about 6 years was very much alive. It was not a rehash of something that we experienced when she was living, but an event that seemed to be in the present. We were in a park that was unfamiliar to me, but one she knew well. The two of us were casually walking through the park; very peaceful and beautiful surroundings with a river to our right. We were both in swimwear, an unusual thing since neither of us had been swimming in years. I don’t remember any conversation, but she seemed to be going to a particular spot along the river and to be looking for something or someone. As we walked closer to the river, and a very tall elegant lady dressed in all white stood up from the bench where she had been sitting with her back to the park and faced us. This lady was my Aunt Sarah. It had been a couple of years since I had seen her, but she was her usual beautiful elegant self. I realized she was also in swimwear which still puzzled me. Maybe we were going to swim in the river because there was a public designated swimming area just a few yards from where she had been waiting for us. She and my Mom hugged, still no conversation. The three of us walked toward the river and waded in up to our waists. It was not very deep but I wanted to float on my back…so, I did. My Mom and Aunt continued to walk hand in hand across the river until they reached the swimming area on the other side. I realized they were way ahead of me, so I rushed to catch up. Halfway across, my Mom raised her hand as if to stop me, and said one word, ‘No’. She then waved, turned and she and Sarah disappeared into a mist that formed along the river bank. At this point I woke up up and felt extremely disoriented. I was in my house in my bed, but I felt lost and confused.
Needless to say, I did not sleep any more for the rest that night. I made coffee, tried to read, but the dream (or was it) haunted me. Later that day, I received a call from my cousin. His mother, my Aunt Sarah had died peacefully in her sleep.
I did not share my ‘dream’ with my cousin because it would have upset him. I did realize that my Mother had given me a rare gift. Mom had been sent to help Sarah ‘cross over’ and allowed me to be there to share this precious time. Not only did I get to see my lovely little mother again in all her glory, but I was allowed to say ‘goodbye’ to my aunt who was special and dear to both my mother and me.
To this day, that dream ocassionally pops into my mind. When this happens, I smile and savor the memory because it was such a special gift from my Mom, and I always cry.

It was appropriate for today's Writing Practice prompt and I could not get it out of my head to write something different.
