I was standing in line overlooking Jackson Square when I noticed a familiar face in the crowd. All I wanted was to get my morning Cafe au Lait and beignets with a little side of peace and quiet. Cafe du Monde is a busy place at this time of day, maybe he will not see me. What do I do...just stand here as though he doesn't exist? I can't pretend not to see him, not to know who he is! He is walking directly toward me, surely he sees me...I must decide. Do I make the first move? Do I turn my back?
"Next," the waiter said. What may I get for you this fine morning Mon Cheri?"
"Cafe a lait and beignets," I responded still looking for that face in the crowd.
Order placed and a number received, I found a table near the fringes near the river. Looking around, I still did not see him. Where had he gone? Was he really there at all?
A voice behind me calling, "Number 12...order number 12."
When I turned, there he was with my order.
"Are you alone?" he asked.
"Of course," I replied. "Are you?"
