For the past three months I have been featured on an online international magazine website - DownTown LA Life. I am honored to be a part of this unique place for artists of all media to have their worked presented.

Poetry Study

For nearly two years I did a daily poetry study from an eclectic collections of poems. For me, it is a way of learning more about poetry, enjoying the reading of poetry, and hoping there is an influence in my own poetry writing.

I completed that book and have moved on to using All of Us - The Collected Poems of Raymond Carver. Carver is one of my favorite writers - short stories or poetry and this book was a logical selection since all of his poetry is included in this one volume. I love Carver's easy conversational style of writing poetry. His pouring out heart and soul onto paper for all to see. This collection takes the reader through his struggles with alcohol, getting clean, meeting Tess Gallagher and writing some of his best work just before he died all too soon. What a kick in the teeth that was to get you shit together, find your true love and be blindsided by the big "C".

This is a daily treat for me to savor just one poem at a time. I have turned to Carver at various times in my life and his wife Tess's work as well. I find a comfort in their words as well as their style.

Poetry is something that I enjoy writing, but will never have the finis of Carver or many of my other favorites. However, I still write a poem a day and keep trying.

New Beginnings - 2015

Yesterday was the beginning of 2015. I have been on this writing journey since the Fall of 2011. I have learned so much along the way, made may mistakes and will make many more, mentored new writers, been mentored by some of the best writers, pushed by at least one editor to go beyond anything I thought I could do, and have so much still to learn.

For not quite 48 hours I gave myself a social media 'cleanse'. I would pop in and out, perhaps make a quick post, but not get caught up in interactions. This made me really take a look at things and reflect even more. During this time and during a marathon of movie watching … yes, I had neglected that indulgence for too long … I realized something important, at least important to me. The more we try to find differences in our lives, our cultures, our individual selves, the more we really are the same. This difference and sameness is a place where we need to find common ground and go from there. Many of my friends have expressed concern with my absence. I will take today and reassure them all is well. Some I thought of as friends, reduced that friendship into so many bad words that would disgrace a poorly written Hallmark card … they certainly didn't care enough to send the very best. This help me decide who is and is not important in my life, begin the house cleaning and move on to better and brighter things for 2015.

I could turn this into a major rant, but I won't because it would be a waste of good white writing space! Instead, for 2015, I will look for the new, the original, the unique and the best in all I do and in everyone I meet. I will take time for me first and other people second since the only person I can really depend upon in the end is myself. I will continue my writing journey. Part of that journey began in October when I was approached by the editor of an international online magazine who asked me to submit. I did, they published, they asked again and I submitted again. The editor is now wanting to discuss creating a byline for me for the magazine. To say I am honored is an understatement, yet I am also proud of my writing that has been shared on an international platform and excited that it will continue on a regular basis (I hope).

So…2015 has a brightness around the edges even though in my little part of the world it was ushered in yesterday with ice, cold rain and an extremely miserable day on the outside, yet warm and cozy on the inside. This morning is still cold, wet and miserable but without the ice from yesterday. As the day was yesterday, 2015 has only to grow and improve and provide opportunities for all of us that we can only imagine.
