Reading My Way Home

For the past couple of years there has been something missing in my life. Reading ... Oh, I have been reading, but I have gotten away from reading as I used to do. Reading for the sheer joy and pleasure of getting lost between the covers of a book. Savoring each page and licking my lips on the taste of words as they sat upon my tongue and tickled my brain.

The technical term for this is ludic reading ... reading for the pleasure and enjoyment of a good book ... escaping into a new world, a new galaxy, a new place to visit, a new place to learn more about.

Most of my life I have had at least one book on my bedside table that I read daily. Sometimes, I had two or three that I read alternately because I wanted to read all of them at the same time and could not wait to get started. That hasn't happened in a very long time.

I have a long list of writers that interest me ... all different, but all that have a lengthy series of books that I enjoy reading ... each author and series different, but books that are page turners and when the most current has been read I cannot wait until the next one comes out.

About a week or so ago I checked on an author I have not read in over two years. An author that I used to stalk for the next book to become available. I found I was at least two books behind and decided I must rectify that lapse in my reading. Taking advantage of great Amazon deals, I soon had both books on their way to me.

Over the weekend I began reading the oldest of the two in this series and spent most of yesterday and today completely absorbed in the latest (for me) drama for Dr. Kay Scarpetta. Oh how I missed her and the brilliant mind of Patricia Cornwell to weave a mystery and keep me in suspense at the end of every page ... chapter. Because of my reading binge I have neglected some things that I routinely do each day ... but, I realized that it just fine. I don't have a set daily schedule, no one to answer to but myself and I can do as I please each day. Time to make reading a part of that daily time.

Waking from a delicious nap this afternoon, I returned to my reading. I had forgotten how good it felt to lose myself in the story. Related to one character as I read. Actually feel time melting like Dali's clocks as I slid into the world of the book not caring what else was going on around me.

I didn't make and resolutions with the new year, however, I have a vow now that the new year is settling in and about to drift into the third month of 2016 ... I will not give up my pleasure reading. I might not have the reading marathon that has gone of for the past two days, but I will read daily and if I get lost in my reading the world can wait until I come up for air. I have a stack of books to get through and more authors to try to catch up on my two year lapse in following their books. Diana Gabaldon, Laurell K Hamilton, James Patters (who I may never get caught up reading all of the different series of books he turns out faster than I can read them), and Sue Grafton just to name a few. I also am trying to do the 2016 New York Public Library reading challenge and have read a couple that fall into their list ... three that I am currently reading off and on as I took the time away for other things for last month.

For right now, I will finish the two Patricia Cornwell books, the latest of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, and Sue Graton's two newest along with a book or two for the NYPL challenge. These books I have on hand and don't have to either buy or try to check out from my small rural library that is limited with many of the books I enjoy.

My mind no longer feels like mush, my brain isn't wrapped in cotton batting keeping me from thinking and tending to my own creative endeavors that I have responsibilities for each month. Plans for the next month or so include compiling three more poetry books and begin organizing a cookbook I hope to have finished by the beginning of 2017.

Makes me tired to just read the above paragraph! Regardless what I have on my plate in the future, pleasure reading will not take a back seat as it has for the past two years.

I will attempt to keep you posted on what I am reading as I go along to let you see how really far behind I am with my pleasure reading!
